Born and raised in England, I live in Victoria, BC on the west coast of Canada. Trained as a civil engineer I worked in the field for ten years before deciding that I had lost faith in the credo that we were "harnessing the powers of nature for the benefit of mankind." I had been deeply affected by "The limits to Growth" which I read in 1972 and by my extensive travels around the world. Only on my return to England did I realize that the Yorkshire Moors, which I had assumed were natural, were actually the remains of ancient clear-cuts of oak forests.
